How your shingles are fastened is one of the biggest factors in how long your roof lasts. Here’s what proper nailing looks like—and what improper fastening leads to.
Size, type, zone & count
Nail Size & Penetration
Roofing nails must be long enough to fully penetrate (or go through) the decking. Proper length and penetration are what actually hold the roof down.
Coil Roofing Nails
The standard fastener for shingle installation, fed from a coil into a roofing nailer for consistent, efficient fastening.
Cap Nails
Nails with a plastic or metal cap—used for fastening underlayment and in specific applications where a wider hold is needed.
Manufacturer Nailing Zones
Every shingle has a designated nailing zone. Nails placed in that zone hold correctly and keep the warranty intact.
Our fastening standard
Texas Roofing & Construction typically installs 5 nails per shingle, and 6 nails on steep-slope roofs or where the roofing system/application requires additional fastening—always within the manufacturer’s nailing zone, at the correct depth and angle.
Pneumatic vs. hand nailing
Air / Pneumatic Nail Gun
Pneumatic roofing nailers drive nails quickly and consistently. Properly adjusted, standardized air pressure is critical so nails seat correctly—not too deep, not too shallow.
Hand Nailing
Shingles are fastened by hand with a hammer. It’s slower and offers per-nail feel, but requires skill and consistency. Neither method is automatically superior—proper fastening and installation are what matter.
Overdriven, underdriven & angled
Overdriven Nails
Driven too deep, the nail head cuts into or through the shingle mat—weakening the hold and voiding coverage.
Underdriven Nails
Left too high, the nail head sits proud and can telegraph through or fail to seat the shingle.
Angled Nails
Nails driven at an angle can cut the shingle or leave the head raised—both compromise the hold.
Improper Placement / Slippage
Nails outside the nailing zone can lead to shingle slippage over time. Correct placement, count and depth prevent it.
Why placement matters
Overdriven, underdriven, angled or misplaced nails all weaken the connection between the shingle and the deck—and can contribute to shingle slippage and blow-offs. Fastening in the proper nailing zone at the correct depth is what keeps your roof on in a Texas windstorm.
