Roof underlayment: your roof’s essential second layer
Underlayment sits between your decking and shingles as a critical backup barrier. Here’s what it does and how felt compares to modern synthetic underlayment.
Felt vs. synthetic
15 lb Felt
A traditional asphalt-saturated felt underlayment—economical and time-tested, but heavier and less tear-resistant than synthetics.
30 lb Felt
A thicker felt offering more durability than 15 lb, with better resistance to tearing and handling during installation.
Synthetic Underlayment
Engineered polymer underlayment—lighter, far more tear-resistant, more moisture-resistant, and safer to walk on. Our preferred underlayment on most roofs.
What underlayment does
Underlayment is a secondary layer of protection installed over the decking and beneath the shingles. It helps protect the roof decking from moisture, provides temporary protection during installation, and shields the deck if wind-driven rain gets beneath the primary roof covering.
Why we prefer synthetic
- Durability & tear resistance: synthetic far outperforms felt
- Moisture resistance: synthetic resists water absorption and wrinkling
- Weight & safety: synthetic is lighter and provides better footing
- Coverage & performance: synthetic lays flatter for a cleaner shingle installation
