Roof ventilation: how your attic breathes

A properly ventilated attic is one of the most important—and most overlooked—parts of a roofing system. Here’s how exhaust and intake ventilation work together to protect your roof.

Exhaust Ventilation

Letting hot, humid air out

Exhaust vents near the top of the roof allow rising heat and moisture to escape the attic.

Ridge Vents

Installed along the roof peak, ridge vents let hot, humid air escape continuously. Paired with intake vents, they create steady, balanced airflow across the whole attic.

Static / Box Vents (750, Slant-Back, Turtle)

Non-powered louvered roof vents that let rising heat and moisture escape naturally. Simple, reliable, and common on many homes.

Turbine / Whirlybird Vents

Wind-driven turbines spin to actively pull warm air out of the attic—extra exhaust when a breeze is present.

Power Attic Vents

Electrically powered fans that exhaust attic air, often controlled by a thermostat and/or humidistat to run when heat or humidity rises.

Solar-Powered Vents

Solar panels drive an exhaust fan using the sun’s energy—no wiring and no added electricity cost.

Off-Ridge Vents

Low-profile exhaust vents placed just below the ridge, useful where a full ridge vent isn’t practical.

Gable Vents

Mounted in the gable-end walls (not the roof), gable vents allow cross-ventilation and can supplement roof-mounted exhaust.

Intake Ventilation

Bringing cool, fresh air in

Intake vents low on the roof pull cool outside air in to replace the air being exhausted.

Soffit Vents

Edge / Other Intake Vents

When traditional soffit ventilation is limited or unavailable, edge-of-roof and other specialty intake vents provide the fresh-air intake a balanced system needs.
